For those members that would like another club shirt, I am taking orders NOW! The sooner the orders are in, the sooner I can place the order with Kombat and get the shirts before the start of the season.

On Sunday 15th June, the Australian Indoor qualifying sectional play was held across the State. Tom Perry won his section at Blackburn North BC and will now meet Chris Baker from Mitcham on Saturday 28th June at Box Hill BC.

5 qualifiers from Victoria will their way through to the main draw of the Australian Indoor Championships at Tweed Heads.

Also yesterday, David Jones narrowly missed out on winning his section at Bayswater. David was one of three 2 game winners in his section and lost the section on a countback of sets won. Michael Walker also missed out on winning his section at Bayswater.

Best of luck to Tom for the 28th at Box Hill BC.

Singles Challenge Matches

Since March, and mostly on Monday Nights, Neil Thurling has been managing a Singles Challenge Match competition.

From 6.30pm on Monday night each week you can take on anybody else for 10% of their points. Everybody starts with 1,000 points and plays a challenge match to increase their balance. Each challenge costs $3 per player and this goes towards prizes at the end of the competition.

Games do not need to be played only on a Monday, though Monday is the evening when Neil Thurling is on site and the night when many bowlers make their challenge appointments. Dress is mufi, and don't forget to rug up on these chilly winter nights.

Be sure to put your match results on the sheet under the verandah to ensure your points are tallied.

**Remember, challenges can be played anytime and anywhere - just don't forget to put the details of match (players and score) on the sheet under the verandah.

Club Shirts - NOW AVAILABLE!!!

The shirts have been delivered. For all of those members who have paid, you can now collect your shirts from the Club when the Secretary is there or call the Secretary and make arrangements for pick-up.

For all those members who have not yet paid, please organise payment ASAP. You can even organise pick-up and payment at the same time with the Secretary.

Here's what they look like:

The shirts have already been on display to the public through the SS&A Classic in Albury recently. Michael Walker and Damien Jones (along with Steve Peisley from Camberwell Central) competed in that tournament and came a credible 20th out of 116 team with the club colours proudly displayed.

It will be great to see all teams take to the green in these shirts this season.

Christmas in July - with a difference

Christmas in July is back again! But with a twist.

This years function will be on a Friday night and will be held at Burrinja Cafe. This means all members and guests can relax and enjoy the evening with no need to prepare, cook, serve or clean up! That must be tempting.

When: 6pm for 6.30pm start, Friday 18th July 2008
Cost: $35 per person

Lawn Bowls Radio show - Sunday 11th May 2008

On SEN 1116am in Melbourne (6am-7am) this coming Sunday morning, Pat McErlean is interviewing the Secretary (Michael Walker) in relation to the survey, the responses, the feedback from Bowls Australia and the State Associations (including the RVBA) and the issues we face in the sport today.

This came about from Pat receiving a copy of the survey responses and giving me a call. The interview goes for about 15 minutes (before any editing) and it was very encouraging to receive support from Pat.

Reminder #1

The AGM will be held next Friday, 9th May 2008, from 7pm. The Treasurer will be in attendance from 6.30 pm to enable you to pay (or make a part payment of at least $50) your subscription to enable you to vote at the meeting. Invoices sent to all members recently outline the cost of your subscriptions for this coming year.

Reminder #2

Payments for club shirts are now OVERDUE. If you haven't yet paid for your shirt please make sure you forward to payment ASAP. The Secretary will be in attendance at the AGM should you wish to finalise your payment then. Invoices sent to all members last month provide details of the cost of your order.

Shirts WILL NOT be provided until payment has been made. These shirts will be mandatory for all club & RVBA matches from the 2008/09 season and beyond.

The presentation night for season 2007/08 will be held on completion of the AGM. Come along and celebrate the success of the 2007/08 season.

Junior Development Squad - Sunday 4th May 2008

Please be reminded that the Group 13 Junior Development Squad are using the club facilities, in particular the synthetic green from 9.30am - 11.30am this coming Sunday morning.

This group has a monthly coaching clinic at different clubs throughout the group and this month the Upwey-Tecoma Bowls Club offered the use of the synthetic as many grass greens are closing.

Therefore NO other bowling will be able to be conducted until the Junior Development Squad clinic finishes at 11.30am. I would also appreciate a couple of volunteers to cook a BBQ for the juniors on
completion of their clinic. Volunteers will be required from 11am for approximately 1 hour. Please let the Secretary know ASAP by return email or phone.

The nominations for committee positions have now been confirmed. The new committee is:

2008 Australian Indoor Singles Championship - Entries

Entries for this event close on Monday 28th April, 2008. I currently have 3 members who are entering and would like to send the entry form in ASAP.

Please contact the Secretary by Friday 11th April with your intention to enter.

All qualifying will be carried out on outdoor synthetics on Sunday 15th June, with subsequent play on Saturday 28th June. The Victorian State Finals will be played on Sunday 29th June with the National Play-offs to be held in August. 4 Victorian representatives will qualify for the National play-offs based on this event.

This event is setsplay (2x 9 end sets, with a 3 end tiebreak if required) and sectional play is sections of 4.

Club Shirt Invoices

All members who ordered club shorts will be receiving an invoice in the mail shortly. All orders placed either in person (with the Secretary) or via phone or email have been processed. After much ado, all members were contacted to ensure nobody was left out.

Please ensure you make your payment by 30th April 2008. Payment can be made by cash or cheque and can be handed to the Secretary (Michael Walker), posted (cheques only) to PO Box 1222 Upwey, 3158 or placed in an envelope and placed in the slot at the right hand end of the bar.

Shirts will NOT be handed over until payment is received. Shirts will be compulsory for all Day and Night Pennant matches from next season.

Club Shirts & and the Grass Green

Club Shirts: The initial order for club shirts has now been placed. Invoices will be mailed out shortly and the due date for payment is 23 April 2008. Payment details will be on your invoice. Delivery is currently scheduled for the week AFTER the AGM. I'm currently trying to see if there is any chance of getting them for the AGM. Stay tuned.

Grass Green: Today the President, Secretary and Greens Director met with a consultant greenkeeper to ascertain the current condition of the green and to find out what alternatives were available to us as a club.

We were very encouraged by the discussions and will begin works on a renovation/rejuvenation programme shortly. More details will be posted once the programme becomes available.

3rd Side - ESRA runners-up

From the President:

My heartiest congratulations to our 3rd side who played in the Roamers Competition Grand Final. After a fabulous game and a nailbiting finish, they went down to Bayswater by just 2 shots. It was a brilliant comeback as they trailed by 13 shots at the tea break. To see the commitment of our players as they focussed on getting back into the game was a delight to the many supporters who came along to barrack. In fact we had 27 members & family so our cheer squad was massive.

I really want to thank our players for the spirit & competitiveness they took into the game. Even though they did not pick up the Premier's flag, they were winners in my eyes and represented our club with pride and passion. We are so proud of your efforts.

Congratulations to ALL who played with the side over the season.

RVBA State Fours Championship - Final 16 - Follow up

The guys did us proud at Altona. However, they were beaten in the Round of 16 by the Group 4 (Murray Mallee) team from Lake Boga.

Well done to Greg Blades, David Jones, Damien Jones and Tom Perry on their Group title nonetheless.

RVBA State Fours Championship - Final 16

The finals for the RVBA State Fours Championship will be contested at Altona BC on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th March (this week).

The Upwey-Tecoma side of Tom Perry, David Jones, Damien Jones and Greg Blades are the Grop 13 Fours Champions and will be vying ANOTHER the State title. Their first match is against a side from Lake Boga in Group 4 (Murray Mallee). The match begins at 10am

All interested supporters are most welcome to attend. Altona BC can be found in Civic Parade, Altona and the phone number is 9315 9711 if you have any enquiries.

The final Round of the RVBA Metropolitan Pennant season is upon us. To mark the occasion there will be a BBQ at the club on completion of Saturdays matches. Families and friends are welcome.

$5 a head will get you a superb BBQ dinner as well as a beer/wine/soft drink from the bar to start you off. Tickets will be available at training on Thursday night and on Saturday. Please RSVP to the Secretary with numbers.

Team selections for Round 18 are available online here. Good luck with the last match for the year (except the 3rd side who will be playing the ESRA final at Boronia BC the following week!)

Side 1 played Pakenham at Pakenham with a 2 rink 14 - 4 win. The likelihood of promotion is now remote, however if certain results go our way next week it is a possibility. The rink results were:

The 2nd side played at home to Croydon and went down on all 4 rinks for a 0 - 18 result. The individual rink results were:

Side 1 played Berwick at home and came away with a 3 1/2 rink win to keep us in contention for promotion. The rink results were:

UTBC 2 2-78 lost to Donvale 2 16-98

The 3rd side travelled to Box Hill RSL to play the second placed team. The side came away with a 1 rink overall win. The rink results were:

- George Simons, Max Frost, Janine Groves, Elaine Shepherd: 17-24

UTBC3 6-40 d Box Hill RSL 2-34

There are 2 rounds to go and all teams are well placed. Barring any unforeseen circumstances the 3rd side will finish top of the ladder and take on the 2nd placed team on Saturday 1st March 2008 at Boronia BC. This is an outstanding result to the 3rd team in their first year in this competition.

The final ladder position of the top side and 2nd side depend upon results of other games. It is possible for both sides to be promoted, so the last two games will require huge efforts from all involved. Training for the next two weeks should be chock-a-block. See you there.

And one last note - best of luck to all those members who are playing in the Australian Open qualifying rounds this week.

Club Shirts

After having decided the design of the shirt and the logo, we have secured some State Government funding to subsidise the cost of the shirts to members.

The cost of a single short sleeved shirt to members will be $15. If the ONLY shirt you would like is a long sleeved shirt, these will be $20 due to the extra cost of long sleeved shirts.

These shirts will be compulsory for all Day Pennant and Night Pennant players from next season.

Please check the sizes charts for Unisex and Ladies and e-mail the Secretary with your chosen size and the number and type of shirts you are after. I will also be taking orders and sizes at the Club over the next couple of weeks. I anticipate having all sizes and orders from members by no later than 16th March 2008.

Ladies may order either the Unisex OR Ladies style of shirt. Men will order the Unisex style.

Second and subsequent shirts will be at the following prices:

Mens:
- short sleeved: $37.00
- long sleeved: $43.50

Ladies:
- short sleeved: $42.00
- long sleeved: $48.00

Please understand that these are cost price and the club is not making any money on the sale of extra shirts.

Be aware that if you do not purchase a second shirt now and would like to in the future, the club will not be purchasing shirts in quantities of less than 10 due to the high cost to do so. To purchase quantities of 10 or more, the above prices (or similar) will apply. A small stock of various sizes will initially be ordered to cater for new members as they join.

Side 1 played Burden Park at Burden Park. On a 13 second grass green it was a bit slower than many tracks played on this season. The rink results were:

Side 2 played Mt Waverely at home and comfortably accounted for their opponents in a 3 rink win. The rink results were:

Side 3 travelled to Box Hill RSL and played the Box Hill RSL 1 side. The 3rd side continued their winning ways with both rinks up. This consolidates the sides top spot on the ESRA ladder and they are now 10 points clear of second place:
