Round 12 wash-up

Side 1

Pakenham has once again proven to be an unhappy hunting ground for the top side. Coming away with a 10 shot loss while winning 2 rinks was not the way the side wanted to head into Christmas. Tom Perry’s rink win of 16 shots coupled with Dave Jones’ rink win of 4 shots were not enough to cover the rink loss of Damien Jones (22 shots) and Robin Southern (6 shots). This side, by virtue of other results, remains in the top 4 and is only half a win out of 2nd spot. C’mon team! Come home with a wet sail just like last season!

Pak 14-96 def. UTBC 4-86

Robin Southern: 24-30
Tom Perry: 31-17
Damien Jones: 9-31
David Jones: 22-18

Side 2

A convincing 3 rink win over Bennettswood puts this side into top spot on the ladder, by superior shots up, heading into the break. After a shaky start to the season the second side has strung together some great wins to power up the table. After narrowly avoiding relegation 2 seasons ago this side consolidated their spot in this Division last year and now looks destined to play finals this year. With 6 rounds to go the pressure is not yet off this side. C’arn the Tigers!

UTBC 2 16-112 def. Bennettswood 4 2-67

Stuart Walters: 30-10
Col Benson: 32-14
Simon Gringhuis: 29-18
Frank van Vloten: 21-25

Side 3

The 3rd side accounted for Ringwood this week with an all rinks win. Stalking the ladder leaders from 6th position entering this round, the 3rd side should be advancing up the ladder and looking towards some finals action as well.

UTBC3 8-40 def. Ring 0-30

Terry Button: 20-16
George Simons: 20-14

Round 10 wash-up

ALL 3 SIDES WIN! Only one rink down for the entire weekend!

Side 1

With the absence of Damien Jones this week, Tas Boyce stepped up to the plate and skipped that rink this week. The result was a 30-21 win over his Narre Warren opponents on the well prepared 15.5/16 second grass. Tom Perry and Robin Southern's rinks also registered great wins while the David Jones skipped rink went down by 8 shots. At one stage that rink was down by as many as 13 shots and managed to turn the tide after the break.

Tas Boyce: 30-21
Robin Southern: 29-19
Tom Perry: 32-16
David Jones: 20-28

Upwey-Tecoma def. Narre Warren (16-2) 111-84

Side 2

Under lights on Friday night at home to Ferntree Gully, the second side had a huge win over their local opposition. Col Benson's rink picked up an 8 and a 7 against the FTG rink skipped by ex-UTBC member Michael Sherlock. Col's rink later dropped 4, 5 and 6 to give those shots and ended up winning by a single shot! The other three rinks all had convincing wins and the change of date saw a few different inclusions. Thanks to all those who came along and watched their clubmates on this occasion.

Col Benson: 31-30
Frank van Vloten: 30-13
Simon Gringhuis: 22-12
Stuart Walters: 30-13

Upwey-Tecoma 2 def. Ferntree Gully 4 (18-0) 113-68

Side 3

After the second side played on Friday night, the 3rd side had the green to themselves on Saturday! This must have suited the team as they won their match against Dandenong both rinks up. Even though the match was halted 4 ends early due to inclement weather, since more than 24 ends were played the result stands. A great effort.

Elaine Shepherd: 17-14 (18 ends)
Terry Button: 24-11 (20 ends)

Upwey-Tecoma 3 def. Dandenong (8-0) 41-25

Round 7 wash-up

Side 1

Veteran bowler Tas Boyce steered his division three rink to a resounding win over their Berwick opponents last Saturday at Berwick.

Boyce who has been the quiet achiever of the club over many years, produced excellent bowls to give skip Damien Jones easy entry into the head allowing the rink to finish the day with a 23 shot win.   Geoff Bell, having his first game in this division for some time, also showed he has lost nothing in ability whilst fourth member of the rink,  Neil Thurling, again put in a fine performance.

Division 3. Upwey-Tecoma lost to Berwick (2-16) 84-104

Side 2

Similarly in the division six side Simon Gringhuis with team members Linda Gray, Jim Miller and Liam Gray blitzed their opponents from Doncaster to record a twenty eight shots up win. With the Colin Benson skipped team also coming up with a win the combined scores of these two teams allowed the side to finish with an overall win by eighteen shots.  The performance of the Simon Gringhuis team was enough to win them the rink of the week award.

Division 6 def. Doncaster (14-4) 99-81

Night Pennant

Tuesday night pennant commenced for the season last week and Upwey-Tecoma got off to a fine start with a win against Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) Bowls Club.

Round 6 wash-up

Upwey-Tecoma Division 3 and Division 6 teams celebrated a return to form last Saturday by defeating Cheltenham and Monbulk respectively by considerable margins. With the 3rd side posting a draw against Ringwood, the mood in the clubrooms was much cheerier compared to the two losses dished out a week earlier. Changes made by the selection committee paid off to the extent that 8 of the 10 rinks competing finished the day with good wins.

Side 1

Best performed rink in the Division 3 side was that skipped by Tom Perry. Stuart Allen moving to this rink as third to Perry, proved to be the main stumbling block for the Cheltenham players as his team won with a 16 shot margin.

With the other three rinks also posting wins the Division 3 side gained maximum points for the match, so keeping them in touch with the top four sides on the pennant ladder.

Division 3. Upwey-Tecoma def. Cheltenham 120-71

Side 2

Frank van Vloten and his team took out the highly sought after rink of the week award with a 20 shot win over their Monbulk opponents. With Colin Benson and Simon Gringhuis also posting good wins, the Division 6 side recorded a 23 shot win over all.

Division 6. Upwey-Tecoma def. Monbulk 103-80

Side 3

Highlight of the day was the performance of new recruit Steven Rome. Having his first game at pennant level Rome showed exceptional ability to continually outplay his opponent and so help his team mates come up with a 16 shot win.

Roamers Upwey- Tecoma def. Ringwood 44-33 (33-33 after 25% taken off for only fielding 3 per rink).

Note: Round 7 selections are NOW available online.

Round 5 wash-up

Side 1

Three rinks settled in pretty quickly at Noble Park on Saturday and knew early on that it was going to a be close match. Trevor Robertson’s rink saw the margin gallop out to 12 shots by the break and were up against it. At the break the scores were:

Tom Perry: 11-13
Robin Southern: 17-12
Andrew Walters: 7-15
Trevor Robertson: 4-16

The selections this week had been more difficult than normal with so many players unavailable - but we soldiered on. After the break we continued our tussle but just couldn’t seem to crack it.

Next week we're at home to Cheltenham. We've never met before so this should be interesting!

Division 3. Upwey-Tecoma lost to Noble Park (0-18) 74-93

T. Perry, M. Walker, K. Walters, M. Kelly: 19-21
R. Southern, S. Allan, T. Boyce, R. Abbott: 25-26
A. Walters, S. Walters, N. Thurling, P. Jeffery: 15-24
T. Robertson, K. Williams, G. Bransgrove, J. Christensen: 15-22

Side 2

Playing at home against second on the ladder Croydon last Saturday, the Upwey second side played great bowls to finish the day with a resounding win by 16 shots.

The outstanding rink on the day was that skipped by Colin Benson, ably supported by Peter Kornow, Don Andrews and Elaine Shepherd. Kornow in particular has relished his promotion to playing third to Benson, and on Saturday manipulated the head to the teams advantage with some exceptional bowling. Completely outplaying his opponent, Kornow paved the way for his rink to finish with a nine shots win.

Other winners for the day were the rinks of Frank van Vloten by four shots and Simon Gringhuis by four shots. Ken Gray was unlucky to lose when his last bowl of the day missed trailing the jack by a couple of centimetres and so record a loss for his rink by the narrowest of margins of just one shot. This side which included four fast improving lady members showed great tenacity to perform so well against such a strong opponent.

Division 6. Upwey-Tecoma def. Croydon (16-2) 103-87

C. Benson, P. Kornow, D. Andrews, E. Shepherd: 30-21
F. van Vloten, D. Eick, G. Simons, G. Kornow: 23-19
S. Gringhuis, Linda Gray, Liam Gray, C. Pavey: 25-21
K. Gray, M. Frost, G. Malane: 25-26

Side 3

The 3rd side was handed a walkover by Bayswater as they have had to withdraw their team from the ESRA competition.
