Club Championship Singles & Round 11 Pennant results

Club Championship Singles - Final

The Upwey-Tecoma Bowls Club singles championship for 2007 was decided on Sunday 16th December when, 2005 champion, Trevor Robertson defeated 2004 and 2007 Victorian Fours champion skip Greg Blades.

Blades settled into his rhythm quickly to take an early lead, and after the first six ends held a five shots lead. The turning point came when in the next end Robertson managed to control the pace of his draw bowls to win the end with 4 shots up. From then on Blades was many times forced into playing the drive shots for which he is renowned.

The different styles of play shown by these two champions was enjoyed by the many spectators and with the score hanging in the balance for most of the match there were differing opinions as to who the ultimate winner would be.

At the completion of 18 ends Robertson held the 25 shots needed to win his second Club Championship in two years.

RVBA Metropolitan Pennant - Round 11

The division 6 side travelled to Heathmont and after club managers agreed to start play in the wet conditions the Upwey-Tecoma side started strongly to take an early lead on the slightly heavy green. Colin Benson and his team continued on their winning way finishing the day with 5 shots up.

The Ken Walters skipped team, after leading their opponents for most of the game, stumbled at the final two ends to go down by three shots.

With Simon Gringhuis suffering a surprise loss and Frank van Vloten also finishing with a loss the total scores had Upwey-Tecoma down by 23 shots.

Note: The Division 3 match against Clayton 3 was called off at 3pm after non-stop rain meant that play could not commence. Both teams share the points as a result.

RESULTS:
Club Championship Singles: Trevor Robertson def. Greg Blades 25-11
Pennant, Division 6: Upwey-Tecoma 2 lost to Heathmont 6 80-103

Round 9 report - Linda creates history

Forced into the role of skip due to illness of regular players in that position, Linda Gray became the first ever female to skip in an Upwey-Tecoma RVBA side. What's more, she played her new role with aplomb to finish the day with a win against her Lilydale opponent.

This rink also boasted a first, with three generations of the same family playing together. Ken Gray, daughter Linda and grandson Liam were ably supported by Max Frost to record a 19 shots up win. Also filling in as a skip for the day, Ken Walters and his team of Bryan Johnson, Ron Abbott and Peter Jeffery exceeded expectations by taking out the rink of the day award with an 30 shots up win. With Frank van Vloten and Jim Miller both back on the winning list this Division 6 side gained maximum points to keep it near the top of the pennant table.

Travelling to the Mulgrave Country Club with a side depleted due to injury and illness, the Division 3 Upwey-Tecoma players had a big task ahead of them against the top of the ladder side. Beaten on the day but certainly not disgraced, Upwey-Tecoma at the half time break were well within striking distance of their opponents.

Tom Perry and his team came back well to finish with a well earned draw, and Trevor Robertson with his team put in a solid performance to go down by a mere two shots. The Jones boys finished the day with the same losing scoreline of just twelve shots after at times being in with a winning chance.

Unfortunately the Heatherdale opponents of the Upwey-Tecoma third side forfeited their match.

RESULTS:

Division 3: Upwey-Tecoma lost to Mulgrave. 84-110
Division 6: Upwey-Tecoma def. Lilydale 129-55

Round 8 report - Top side wins at home

The Upwey-Tecoma Division 3 side got back on the winning list last Saturday with a big win over Pakenham at home. All four rinks had substantial winning margins which resulted in a huge 57 shots up percentage boosting result. David Jones and team mates Greg Blades, Tas Boyce and Geoff Bell put in a rink of the week performance to finish with 19 shots up whilst Tom Perry and team comprising Robin Southern, Stuart Allen and Michael Walker were not far behind with a 17 shots up win. The Trevor Robertson skipped team of Ken Williams, Stuart Walters and Judy Walters chipped in with a handy 14 shots up win and Damien Jones was back on track to finish 7 shots up on his opponents.

The division six side travelled to Croydon to contest what proved to be a very close encounter. With Frank van Vloten and Jim Miller posting small losses, the pressure fell on the rinks of Simon Gringhuis and Colin Benson to get the shots required for the overall win. Gringhuis finished with a 14 shots up win to put the side in a winning position, but it was not to be. Needing to trail the jack with his last bowl, Benson was able to reach the jack but not enough movement of it to give the Upwey- Tecoma side the win.

The third side ventured to Boronia where the result hung in the balance until the last three ends. Kevin Gamel in his first outing as skip came home with a very good 5 shots up win but unfortunately the Deiter Eick rink failed to get enough shots to avoid a small loss to their opponents.

RESULTS:

Division 3: Upwey- Tecoma def. Pakenham 119-62
Division 6: Upwey-Tecoma lost to Croydon 85-88
Side 3: Upwey-Tecoma lost to Boronia 33-46
